Education and empowering the community is the where the heart of the RISE Clinic lies. Awareness about disease management and prevention will enable people to make informed decisions and empower them to take charge of their health. Outreach programs such as the RISE Clinic Health Fair are designed to focus on improving chronic disease self management, decreasing drug-drug and drug-disease interactions, decreasing transmission of infectious diseases and improving overall health maintenance. Unlike most health fairs in this area, the approach of this health fair was quite unique. One of the main objectives of the health fair was to discourage the use of medication and prescription dispensing for the short-term treatment of chronic diseases. Instead volunteers focused on educating patients on their disease state and providing basic screening. Encouraging the community to take control of their disease state and learn how to manage and prevent it was greatly emphasized.
